Do you have concerns about the safety of your home? Is the safety and security of your family and property causing you sleepless nights? If you said yes, what you need to invest in is the services of a full-service security company. You can also follow other simple steps to keep your home safe. To guide and offer you peace of mind, Kodiak Security Services has listed three questions about security issues at home and tips for dealing with them.

1. What do you do if a stranger comes to your house?
If you’re home and someone you don’t know knocks on your door, make your presence known. You don’t have to open the door; talking through the window or door is OKAY. Call a friend or family member and keep them on the line so they can call for help if something goes wrong. Just the threat of you being on the phone will generally deter a potential intruder. When you’re home, make sure you keep a light or the TV on; these are clear signals that someone is there and that breaking in would not be a good idea.

2. What should you do when you go on vacation?
When you’re not home, don’t advertise it! Don’t post on Facebook that you’re going to the Bahamas for a week with your family. Thieves see that as an open invitation. Keep the shades drawn so people can’t see into your house and check out what you have. The easiest way for a burglar to case your home is to look through a glass door or windows. Remember to go around your house and check to see that all the windows and doors are locked. If you’re going to be gone for a long time, it is wise to hire a house sitter to stay there for a few nights to collect your mail, mow your lawn, and park their car in your driveway, so it looks like someone is there.

3. My home was robbed, now what should I do?
Call the police and let them know someone has been in your home. Go to a neighbor’s house and wait for the police to arrive; you don’t want to be there if the burglar comes back for more.

Do not touch anything that the burglar may have touched because this would obscure potential evidence like fingerprints. This includes door handles, windows, and items that may have been moved or knocked down.

When the police arrive, tell them what is missing. Please provide them with pictures and serial numbers of the missing items. Next, contact your insurance company and file a claim as soon as possible.
